Designed by J Howard Standing, Tarzana, California, and Thomas Ferguson, Sydney, British Columbia. Adopted as the official California State tartan by the State Legislature on July 23rd 2001 by California Governor Gray Davis. Closely based on the Muir tartan after the famous botanist and environmentalist, John Muir, who lived in California.
